Beginners Qualification in English for Health & Social Care

Entry 3

This free* course is suitable for individuals who have recently moved to the UK and/or have no prior knowledge of the English language.

Learners can expect to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills within the context of topics relevant to the health and social care industry. Topics include cultural issues, work routines, interacting with colleagues, interacting with patients, dealing with problems and applying for jobs in health and social care. Some units include general lexis/skills development to suit the needs of those who are yet to enter the sector.

Spoken English skills will cover: communicating at work with other staff and with residents, active listening, delivering presentations, formal/informal and persuasive language, and questioning techniques. Reading and writing skills will cover understanding and writing care plans, report writing and other work-related tasks, note-taking and summarising, critical thinking and negotiation skills.

Where: This is a blended learning course, some learning will take place in classrooms at Waltham Forest College or Barking & Dagenham College.

Start date: Various start dates between March – July 2019.

Length: 10 - 12 weeks part-time, 5 hours per week or 6 week intensive course. Learners are expected to be in the classroom up to 2 days a week. There are 45 guided learning hours on this course.

Course type: Blended course delivery, with face to face as well as online options for independent study.
